Shadows and Silhouettes

The first time I took note of my habit of taking silhouettes was when I first looked at my photograph of a group of four people in a row (first picture). They were walking under a bridge and covered in shadow, with the ground beyond them in full sunlight. Look closely and you’ll see the bottles they are carrying are in colour. This was not a post-processing decision; this is how they appeared straight out of the camera.

For many of the pictures of shadows and silhouettes that appear below, it was the background that first caught my attention. I would then wait for a figure to enter the frame, but only as a shape.
